  • Safeguarding our sites

    Monkswood_reservoir-660

From small pumping stations to major sewage treatment works, we own hundreds of sites and landholdings across the region.

As reflected in our Biodiversity Action Plan, we recognised that we have a responsibility to conserve and enhance our land for biodiversity.

    We aim to:

    • have a landholding which is rich in biodiversity, contributing to the region’s biodiversity
    • work to halt or reverse biodiversity loss where it occurs on our land.

A considerable resource for biodiversity, our landholding consists of many different habitats  which are home to a wide variety of species including:

    • chalk grassland sites in Wiltshire
    • heathland habitat within Dorset
    • open water, marsh and fen within Somerset
    • ancient woodland around Bath.

Some of our sites enjoy the very highest levels of protection under UK and European law due to the quality of habitat and we are continually working to maintain these sites. These include nearly 300 hectares of land designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

We aim to meet the national target set by the government to maintain 95% of these SSSIs in a favourable condition by 2020.

To do this we carry out specialist habitat management on our own sites and work with a range of partners who manage some of the best sites for wildlife on our behalf.

To find out about our current performance on these sites, see our sustainablity indicators.
