Trade effluent

If your business discharges non-household sewage (trade effluent) into the public sewer, you will need to obtain consent from us.

What is trade effluent?

Trade effluent is any liquid that is discharged into the public sewer from a business, trade or industrial process. This does not include domestic sewage (eg, wastewater from toilets, hand washing or kitchens) or uncontaminated rainwater.

Trade effluent is discharged from a variety of business premises, such as launderettes, car washes, food and drink production, metal finishing and chemical manufacturing.

Effluent from hotels, pubs, restaurants and takeaways is not currently classed as trade effluent, although it is regulated under the Water Industry Act 1991.
