Warning over fraudulent water bill calls

Wessex Water has warned customers to be wary of scam calls involving demands for water bill payments.

A handful of customers have contacted the water company raising concern that they were pressurised for card payment details or told a direct debit had failed and they needed to make an immediate payment.

Wessex Water urged customers to be vigilant and if they receive a suspicious or fraudulent call to hang up and check it is genuine by contacting the company directly on 0345 600 3 600. Anyone who believes they are a victim of a fraud should report it to Action Fraud as soon as possible by calling 0300 123 2040

Director of customer services Oliver Jerrome said: "A number of customers have contacted us and explained they were put under pressure to make a payment. Fortunately, the customers quickly became suspicious and ended the call.

"Our advisers would never put any customer under such pressure to make a payment in this way and people should be wary of these scam calls purporting to be from Wessex Water."

Wessex Water is reminding customers that it offers support to those who may be worried about being able to pay their bill due to Covid-19.
