Smart meters

In 2025 we’re embarking on one of our most exciting and ambitious programmes to upgrade our water meters to smart meters.

Why are we installing them?

Water meters are a brilliant way to help our customers save water in their homes. Almost three quarters of our customers have a water meter and only pay for what they use.

Our smart meter programme is one of the ways we’re helping to keep more water in the environment in the face of climate change and a growing population.

Smart meters collect water use data every day, compared with our current meters which are only read every six months – here are some of the benefits:

Where and when?

We’ll be installing smart meters in a phased approach between mid 2025 and 2035.

We’ll be starting in the Salisbury area before moving north to Amesbury and Shrewton and surrounding villages.

What does it mean for you?

Do you need to do anything?

No, you don’t need to do anything now – we’ll be in touch before we start work in your area and are ready to install your smart meter.

If you have a meter

If, like most of our customers, you are already on a meter, we will upgrade your meter to a smart one when we reach your area.

If you don’t have a meter

If you are currently an unmetered customer, we can install a smart meter and you can choose to switch to metered charges if you would like to.

Will we arrange an appointment?

In some cases, we may need to contact you to arrange an appointment to fit your smart meter. And if you are a Priority Services customer and we know that you need water for specific reasons we’ll contact you to arrange a suitable time.

Will you receive an in-home display?

Smart water meters don’t come with an in-home display, like some energy smart meters have. Instead, you will be able to access your smart data online from your phone, laptop or computer.
